National Parks of Spain

In 1916, Spanish law created protected natural parks, two years later, the first protected areas were inducted, that being the Mountain of Covadonga (now National Park of the Picos de Europa) and Valle de Ordesa (now National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido).

The National Parks Act establishes, through its three unique articles, a system of conservation raised, from the outset, as a guarantee for its enjoyment by the generations to come, in a manner compatible with its enjoyment by the current ones. Spanish National Parks are the greatest exponent of the richness of Spanish biodiversity and are also spaces for the service of knowledge and open to visit by citizens. Over these 100 years, the management of our Parks has brought together these two aspects and promotes the development of the territory in which they settle and the improvement of the living conditions of the population that inhabits them.

Parque Nacional del Teide
Tenerife

Antonio de Viana wrote in his book " Antiquities of the Lucky Isles" in 1604 "Nivaria is called by the snow that usually plies the very high summit of the sacred Mount Teide, excelso Atlante, which means life on the white snow mountain. So the great Teide, is called Tenerife la Nivaria, which is the same as snow mountain. "

Tenerife is the largest and oldest of the Canary Islands. Its extraordinary landscape is a geological monument of the most spectacular of the world, in which the volcanic cones and lava flows form an extraordinary set of colours and forms. One can not forget its great biological wealth, the extraordinary high percentage of endemic plant species and the importance in terms of number and exclusivity of its invertebrate fauna.

This island was almost destroyed by  volcano in 1730
Locals say that it is not a dead land, but a newborn. Although seemingly desolate, these harsh landscapes have been colonized mainly by plants. Predominant black and red hues of lapillis and sands and obscure basaltic lavas, all dotted with spots of different colours belonging to the numerous lichen species. Also there is the biological wealth and the great number of vegetal and animal endemisms.

The Doñana National Park is a mosaic of ecosystems that shelter a unique biodiversity in Europe. Particularly outstanding is the salt marsh, of extraordinary importance as a place of passage, breeding and wintering for thousands of European and African birds. In the Park live unique species, and in serious danger of extinction, like the Iberian imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx.

Doñana means the confluence of a set of ecosystems (beach, dunes, preserves, marsh ...) that give this Park a unique personality.
