On 9th October the Region of Valencia Day is celebrated
For Valencia this fiesta is about regional pride. In 1238 Valencia was finally reconquered by the Christian army of King Jaime I, after over 5 centuries of Islamic rule. King Jaime did not just annex the Valencia kingdom to his crown, but in a very generous gesture he established the Valencian Kingdom as an autonomous region, with its own governing bodies and courts. This was the birth of the Valencian Community as we know it, and a source of great pride for the Valencians today.

Every year, thousands of devotees make a pilgrimage to the sacred shrine of Moclín to pay their respects to the image of Christ. Curing female sterility is just one of the many miracles attributed to the saint, which has led to thousands of followers pitching up at the sanctuary every year.
Once you've caught the spectacle of the pilgrims streaming towards the sanctuary, you can visit the Arabic castle on the peak of the mountain for a dose of nature worship too.

Cava Week
Sant Sadurní d'Anoia
Barcelona
6-14 October
Every autumn, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia
Catalonia's largest Cava-producing town, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (San Sadurni de Noya), celebrates its local cava production  with feasts, concerts and ceremonies.
There will be a Cava Queen, who will arrive accompanied by her ladies-in-waiting and escorted by the mounted brigade of the Barcelona police.
Lots of other special events to make sure everyone has a rip roaring time including official dinners, a 300-person bicycle race, an art exhibition dedicated to Cava and a Petanque evening.
Local Catalan folk music concerts, cava symposiums and, of course, everyone will try and squeeze onto 'The Cava Train' the annual Barcelona train ride.
Every 12 October 1000 people from Barcelona board the Cava train bound for Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.
Traditional costumes and fancy dress herald the arrival of the carnival characters, including the ' big heads' and 'cabezudos', as they are escorted with a trumpets to the town hall and Cava Houses. After a tour of the cellars, followed by lunch and entertainment, they return to the Catalan capital.

Nerja Feria
8 - 13 Oct
Nerja
The Nerja feria is celebrated in October, when the streets and squares of the town come alive with colour and music.Casetas (tents) are set up, decorated with crepe-paper and fairy lights, and filled with revellers from dusk till dawn. On the streets a variety of parades (including the crowning of the feria queen) and street theatre performances take place, though the action centres around the casetas that blast out flamenco music.
Peer into one of the tents and you will find women in traditional Spanish dresses dancing to the click of castanets, while gentlemen in grey suits with carnations in their buttonholes nurse large glasses of manzanilla sherry (the traditional feria drink). If the noisy casetas all get a bit too much, there is always the open-air fairground to enjoy.

Torrijos Pilgrimage and Festival
at Valencina de la Concepción
7 October
Valencina
The pilgrimage of Torrijos is a revived tradition, believed to have died out in the 19th century. It celebrates the patron saint of the town of Valencina, La Virgen de La Estrella. A procession sporting the saint's effigy makes a four-kilometre round trip to the local sanctuary at Torrijos, transported as gracefully as possible on a specially-decorated ox-cart. Once there, a special Mass is said by the priest.
On the return of the procession, the pilgrims go into carnival mode, with grand parades featuring giants, cabezudos (giant papier-maché heads traditionally worn by carnival-goers), concerts, brass bands, competitions, horse races and fireworks. The whole weekend is taken up with festivities and merry-making and visitors are welcome to join in.

Quéntar Moors and Christians Festival
6 - 7 October
Quéntar
a battle re-enactment of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella's re-conquest of the Moors in a series of three acts. The first re-enactment (on the Saturday) shows  the invasion of the Moors. The third and final act ends with the Christians proclaiming themselves victorious and converting the Islamic Moors by baptising them.
Quéntar is a small Andalusian village, hence the production will probably be a lot more personal than reenactments held in other grander Andalusian towns. It is well worth the visit to gain an insight into the traditional Spanish fiesta

Montoro Religious Festival

The small town of Montoro starts a week of religious festivities on the 7 October with a dawn mass for the Fiesta de Montoro y Rosario de la Aurora, followed by parades with the obligatory large papier-machéd heads (cabezudos) and giants, plus a floral concert, fireworks and a rock concert. The festivities continue for several days until 12 October, the fiesta of the Virgen del Pilar.
