Xàtiva (Valencia) Held since 1250, the year that King James I The Conqueror grants the city of Xativa Lleida the privilege of holding a fair livestock, mostly horses which has continued to this day around 750 years during which the fair whilst maintaining its traditions had continued to grow and has developed its activity continuously. According to historian Brother Ramirez, the longest period without a fair Xativa which was followed in 1707, that Philip V's troops burned the city. Later, in 1855, as a result of a cholera epidemic, the mayor of Xativa, Genaro edges, makes a public announcement in newspapers so suspended until the show will improve the health situation, which did not occur in during that year. However, the Fair August Xativa now stands as the oldest existing in Valencia.
Its beginnings to the present, this show has suffered a series of changes, such that began taking place around the 11th of November, the feast of St. Martin in the middle of autumn, with no evidence of the exact year that happens to be held on August 15 and following days, coinciding with the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, and therefore half of the summer.
Xàtiva August Fair has undergone changes in its location the activity together with the Centre Portal Cocentaina, then called in the market place or fair. Thus the wall of the wall bordering the garden city for today's Bes, became fully occupied with the horses. Over the years the growth of the physical space of the fair came to understand the so-called Way of San Antonio, along the road to Genoa. From this part of the city was moving to the incorporation of other commercial activities along the wall, already exist today, that the line delimiting the Alameda. In August 1887, the local weekly newspaper El Clamor Xativa review the following: the fair this year promises to be lavish. When I wrote these lines are being built which houses more quickly to the numerous requests that are made. Regarding the expected stock lots of fun, because, as we have history, we can ensure that this year will exceed the number of cattle to the above and as these there were 12,000 less in each show.
In 1919, the Herald of Xativa indicated in its websites: Dive into the Alameda and see, from the old San Antonio and sunny walk, ride mountain air and peace, with the terraces of its edges occupied for many bulls for breeding, an army of jònecs look dolçàs and tanning, to Emilio Castelar Square (now Square Pond) with its piles of garlic for seed and assorted stuff culture, a huge crowd that runs slow, rolling in the swell all the lips ...
Since the late nineteenth century, when the fair, according to records, occupying an area of 3000 meters, of which 2000 were dedicated to winning horses, cows and wool being the 1000 occupied houses and huts of fuel, agricultural objects , pottery, grass, etc.., until today when the fair covers the entire space between the square of the pond and the Spanish Steps, perched up stalls, attractions and places of sale until six parallel lines along the Alameda, the surface area for the operation of our trade fair has become of 45,000 square meters, distributed by sectors as follows: 7,000, located opposite the Institute José de Ribera, to the agricultural fair are 3,000 in the square dedicated to the pond and for other commercial sites, including attractions, allocated 35,000 square meters fully occupied the avenues of James I and Selgas. If everything has been said adding that the sets for a festive and cultural development program, are located in various parts of the city: the Cathedral Square, Peace Gardens, gazebo, playground of the school Attilio bruschetta, Professor Angel Lacalle Street, St. Peter's Square, and street Puig, the Garden Plaza de Mora, municipal hall, sports, etc.., concluded that virtually the entire city of Xativa is occupied by some of the trade fair 15 to 20 August.
The markedly bought fair trade, led and continues today bringing the most important sectors in each moment of history, from 1250 to today, have been found in it the logical evolution of the transformation economy of the city. Since those early horses engaged in cultivation, has been seen in animals today transactions of luxury, joining in their situation of agricultural machinery. The earthenware and the fang that visitors only acquired the various localities of the province of the Coast, the Channel, Albaida Valley, Bank etc.. To begin or renew your trousseau, passed without completely lost its presence in the marketing of these same objects in metal, plastic or fiber. Of those horses and boats driven by pulleys complicated by the force of hunger, has today come to light and resounding courts strollers. Along with the traditional sites of palms, which resistixen to disappear due to its remarkable acceptance, you can see other fans offering modern cable or batteries. As for toys, just say that those firers who yesterday offered us the easel cardboard or wooden tricycle, today they or their successors will have the latest models of motorcycles and cars battery. Times have changed and the fair, still retaining much of its past, has been evolving at a pace that marked the time. Hence its acceptance among the people to continue in force each year acudixen the meeting.
Along with the business side, our lives in Fair festive activities, sports and culture. Thus, we have managed to transform it into a meeting place for those who acudixen stimulated not only the shopping, wide variety, but also the diversity of its programming: fireworks, dances, bullfight , exhibitions, theater, dance competitions ... All this in a variegated program that begins on the night of August 14 to finish on the morning of day 21.
But not always fair Xativa has the same length or the same festive program. Thus, although it began ten days of activity, then spent three late nineteenth century, and was five days in 1890 when Mayor Richard takes the source. In 1925 there were eight days of show programming as it ended on August 22, being Mayor Joseph Pfeifer. In 1930 held only 15 to 20, under the mayorship of July River. But the following year, 1931, Jose Tudela mayor, the fair lasts for nine days, from 15 to 23 August. In 1933 the fair begins on August 13 drawing is Sunday, but opened the evening and ends 14, 20, was mayor, Jose Medina. After the Spanish Civil War, in 1942, the fair and festival is held from 14 to 23 August, with the mayor occupied by Antonio Villena. The following year, with Mayor Manuel Casesnoves as accidental, is extended until August 22 drawing is Sunday. In 1952, with Francisco J. Ansuátegui mayor, the show continues until August 24, taking ten days of its program. Blasco in Eugene with the mayor, the fairs of years become six days and a maximum of seven days duration official. This keeps the following mayors: Ansuátegui Ignacio and Eduardo Nafría to arrive in 1976, Jesus Miguel Square, eight days, from 15 to 22 August, seven days later in 1977 and six in 1978. With the return of democratic political system, Manuel Casesnoves Soldevila began his tenure as head of the mayor of Xativa giving it the popular name for the festive demonstration: Fair in August, with a length that will remain fixed until today: six days, except that in 1988, coordinated by Antonio Martinez Revert, the festivities are scheduled from 13 to 21 August.
About the program of shows, which takes place to give more incentive to stay in the trade fair visitors, at first be confined to jònecs races, fireworks, dances and concerts enlivened by bands Local music: The New, The Primitive and the Banda regime garrison at Xativa. The fireworks were fired in the square Españoleto go to the Garden of Peace and carried on today: in the Carmen district. The first bullring was built of wood, and, as recorded in 1887, its preparation and implementation have cost 9210 pesetas, raising in the first three days a total of 16,549 pesetas. Later they held contests and dances rump of the country.
With the passage of time extending the range of programming the show, beginning to be called every day with the name of the stellar activity of the day. Thus, the programs appear in the Day Contest Musical motivated by the importance of this event was acquired, as the groups participating in railroad arrived in the morning and were received by local bands, which together initiated a city tour the sounds of bars for as the evening perform its action. Kids Day will make the programming of several events for children, and the Real de la Feria is contested races scooters for children under 10 years, the traditional costumes contest for over 8 years and carcasses and fireworks showered with candy and toys to unleash these exploded in the air. The day consisted of Ribera that first day of the fair, making the opening of art shows, exhibits paintings and photography, the council went to the monument to José de Ribera for placing a laurel wreath. For several years he also held the so-called Day of Charity, which consists of city ladies take up donations, and in conjunction with the City, offering hearty meals on the first or second market day in charity shops Xativa, as were the Charity or nursing Desamparados. The Day of the Youth Front, with several events, youth and sport generally, was the star of many fair schedules in the forties and fifties.
Competitions that were in other times and over the years has purifying, include those made in the Glorieta de José Mirror in the thirties, where organized by the Commission or by the Fair Municipal Central Fallas Committee were held Xativa The Manila shawl contest, dance the resistance, the dress of four pesetas, the hairstyles, the choice of my Ugly Xativins, Angle won by Ricardo in 1934, or dance for couples, while that develops the celebrations.
Another activity that provided the union of hospitality, supported by several commercial sector, was the basis of race waiters Royal Street Fair gave back to Moncada to finish the point, taking each participant a tray with a glass and a bottle full of liquid. Who covered the distance in the shortest time and without dumping lots of glass got the prize. Recently the organization and sponsorship of the Association of Xativa, ADEX, has rescued this fair event for the program.
The nights of years 40, 50, 60 and 70 were in the show cause for celebration attended celebrations in the terraces of the Casino Xativa and Commercial Circle, with great acceptance by the public, until he made his selection assistance, confined to members of the same few people and more.
The competitions, which began with the traditional race walking in the Real, gave way to the full range of sports are practiced, because even in the fifties of this century played a rugby match at the Camp The Murta football from a selection of Valencia and the team Tavernes, but football is the sport that constantly appears in most programs show. Lately, badminton, volleyball, football, basketball, athletics, table tennis, chess, etc.., Have been added to the traditional racing bikes and cycling.
The presence from a time not far in this part shows distinctly cultural theater, operetta, dance and fine arts events and local sport and spectacle: pull shot and ball Valencia (not has come to settle in our Fair), song, etc.., marked the line that currently remains in the schedule of the fair Xativa, together with sport, music, fireworks or cooking represented in the popular and busy Paella Festival.
As a writer and poet, spoken on Blai Bellver:
The world's largest fair,
the oldest quiz ...
Today ... is as if behind the more than 750 years of operation, and this involves a lot of history.
