Spain - overview

Cap Roig Botanical Garden

 Cap Roig Botanical Garden
Palafrugell

In north west Spain on the Mediterranean coast is one of the most beautiful places in Spain, if not Europe. It all began in 1927, when two magnificent dreamers Colonel Woevodsky and Dorothy Webster began building a castle and botanical garden.

They created a magical garden with terraces from the castle to the sea. The first ones (Nuns’ Terraces, El Bassin Terrace, Lovers’ Garden) are connected by the Cypresses Staircase, and have a marked architectural character. From there on, the paths descend gently towards the coast. This area is home to the Spring Garden, Cactus Garden and Geranium Walk with stunning flowering seasons.

The Costa Brava is famous for its fabulous beaches and these magical gardens are a like a jewel in the crown.

From the hilltop castle down to the beach, with elegant pathways lined with tall cypresses. In summer the scent of yellow sage, oleander and bougainvillea is heaven but for the best coastal views, the Mirador de la Lady (The Lady’s Viewing point) or the Cactus Garden.

There is annual open-air music festival which is held in the plaza or square in front of the castle at which the greatest performers in the world appear.
