The Requena Wine Harvest Festival
21st August to 1st September 2013
The Wine Harvest Festival of Requena is added to what was the old Fair, of mediaeval origin.
The Wine Harvest Festival stems from the old festivities in which the entrance of the autumn and the time of the grape harvest were celebrated. This festival was born of these simple festivities and it serves as a promotion of the excellent wines of the land. It was 1948 when seven people decided to try to unite their fellow citizens in the difficult post-war years through this festival. Without a doubt those men were ignorant of the fact that their initiative gave birth to the first wine harvest festival in Spain, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in 1964.

This year the festival begins on 21st August and with the fair it will go on until 1st September. Amongst the festive events to be highlighted are the Noche de la Zurra - the journey round the city with brass bands and wineskins, the treading of the first grapes and the nights of the farm workers and of the wine. There is plenty to see and do in this summer festival, one can even visit, between one wine and another, some of the most outstanding monuments of the city.

The Wine Harvest Festival is structured into four commissions that represent, on the one hand, the three historic quarters of the city: the Villa (Town) - the origin of the present day Requena; the Peñas - second in antiquity and Moorish par excellence; Arrabal - the most modern and situated between both; and a commission for Ausentes (the Absent), which represents the natives of Requena who live outwith their home town.

But this festival gives a lot in very little time, and enjoying it is as easy as getting to Requena and going with the flow. It is a good opportunity for getting to know its historic quarter, its modern area and for going around its wine cellars. Drinking the wines and accompanying them with the Requena sausage or other typical dishes, such as morteruelo (a type of mince pie) or ajo arriero (cod stew with red peppers), can be quite an experience.
