One of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1218 The University of Salamanca  quickly gaining a reputation outside of Spain as a great cultural and teaching centre.

 In 1218 King Alfonso IX of Leon founded the University of Salamanca, which is considered the oldest existing Hispanic colleges. Among the founding legislation of the University of Salamanca highlight the charter granted by King Alfonso X, dated May 8, 1254, laying down the rules of organization and financial allocations, and the Papal bulls of Alexander IV, issued in 1255, which is confirmed by the university foundation, recognizing the universal validity of the degrees awarded by it and is granted the privilege of having its own seal.

 It was the first European institution to receive the formal title of "University"

It is the oldest founded university in Spain and the third oldest European university in continuous operations.

Salamanca draws undergraduate and graduate students from across Spain; it is the top-ranked university in Spain based on the number of students coming from other regions.

 It is also known for its Spanish courses for non-native speakers, which attract more than two thousand foreign students each year.

Today the University of Salamanca is an important centre for the study of humanities and is particularly noted for its language studies, as well as in laws and economics. Scientific research is carried out in the university and research centres associated with it, such as at the Centro de Investigación del Cáncer, Instituto de Neurociencias

de Castilla y León, Centro de Láseres Pulsados Ultracortos Ultraintensos. In conjunction with the University of Cambridge, the University of Salamanca co-founded the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) in 1989.

 

The University of Salamanca, Spain is a medium sized university with over thirty thousand students.
