Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta to Reduce Annoying Restart Prompts

Activision is streamlining the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta by significantly reducing the frequency of ‘update requires restart’ prompts that have frustrated players for years. For the past six years, players have been forced to restart their game immediately after launching to apply updates, a process considered extremely disruptive.

Beta Changes & Platform Variations

The beta aims to minimize these restarts, though they may still appear while actively playing during an update. Platform-specific differences will persist during the beta; PC and PS5 will experience the fewest prompts, while Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 will continue to be prompted to restart. However, Activision anticipates a widespread reduction in restarts once the full game launches.

Notably, the Modern Warfare 4 beta will be released as a standalone file, bypassing the traditional Call of Duty HQ launcher. This change is designed to provide a smoother experience for players, eliminating the need to install the entire launcher application.

Beta Launch Details & Campaign Level

The beta begins on Friday, August 21st at 11:00 AM PT across all platforms except Nintendo Switch 2, which will access the beta during its second weekend, starting August 28th. Pre-loading for the beta will commence on August 20th at 9:00 AM PT. In addition to multiplayer content, the beta will also feature a level from the game’s campaign, marking a first for the series.
