Henry Cavill Leads Warhammer 40,000 Animated Series with Deathwatch Focus
Amazon is doubling down on its Warhammer 40,000 universe, greenlighting a long-form animated series spearheaded by Henry Cavill as executive producer. The project, initially conceived as a spinoff from the successful 2024 Secret Level episode, will center on the elite Space Marine chapter, the Deathwatch, promising a significantly expanded narrative within the grimdark setting.
Expanding Beyond the Anthology
Dave Wilson, director of the original Secret Level episode and now co-creator, will helm the new series alongside John Orloff, writer of Band of Brothers. Blur Studios, responsible for the striking visuals of the initial installment, will once again handle the animation. This represents a strategic shift for Amazon, moving beyond the episodic format of Secret Level to embrace a more sustained, serialized story.
According to Wilson, the decision to expand the Warhammer 40,000 story was driven by the exceptional response to the initial Secret Level offering. ‘Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology,’ Wilson stated to Variety. ‘It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories. The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right.’
A 20-Year Vision Realized
Wilson revealed that the ambition for this project stretches back over two decades. ‘I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 for more than 20 years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.’ The series is slated to feature an undisclosed number of episodes, though Wilson described it as a ‘long-form story’ – a deliberate ambiguity that underscores the scale of the undertaking.
Amazon’s continued investment in Warhammer 40,000 follows the already announced live-action adaptation, currently being developed with Cavill. The studio’s broader gaming portfolio includes the Fallout series, the upcoming Tomb Raider show starring Sophie Turner, and a God of War series facing ongoing casting adjustments. Furthermore, the adaptation of Life of Strange is currently in production. The precise timing of this animated series relative to the live-action project remains uncertain, though it could potentially precede the live-action debut.
