Crimson desert races to $200m: ps5 fuels surge

While official sales figures place the game at 4 million units sold, analyst Rhys Elliott reports that $75 million of that revenue originated specifically from the PlayStation 5. This figure is particularly noteworthy, given the console's strong performance in the RPG genre.

Elliott's findings, detailed in a Substack post, suggest a significant appetite for high-fidelity, single-player-focused open worlds. The game's success comes as a surprise to some, considering the initial concerns following a high Metacritic score, which some believed would deter broader consumer appeal.

The data also reveals a surprising overlap between Crimson Desert players and those of Dragon's Dogma 2, with 38% of PS5Crimson Desert players also having played the latter. This is a higher percentage than typically observed with games like Assassin's Creed: Shadows, hinting at a shared audience for immersive RPG experiences.

Pearl Abyss, which reportedly invested ₩200 billion (approximately $133 million) over seven years in development, had previously projected 5 million units in sales. The game's strong performance suggests this figure may be revised upwards.

Looking ahead, the question of downloadable content (DLC) remains open, although CEO Heo Jin-young has indicated no immediate plans. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is reportedly under consideration, indicating the developer's willingness to explore new platforms.

The game's financial success is noteworthy, especially considering the revenue split with platform holders like Sony, Microsoft, and Valve. However, Crimson Desert’s performance is undeniable. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of meticulously crafted open worlds and a powerful statement for Pearl Abyss.
