Embark splits ways with co-founder amid misconduct allegations
Embark Studios, the developer behind the popular games Arc Raiders and The Finals, has announced the departure of co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Rob Runesson following allegations of sexual misconduct. The split comes after an anonymous individual shared accusations online, sparking a broader conversation within the The Finals community.

Investigation finds no substantiation, but relationship unsustainable
The allegations, first circulated about a month ago by The Finals streamer Balise, detailed a pattern of behavior involving Runesson and a female streamer. The accuser claimed Runesson repeatedly sought romantic and sexual conversations, and leveraged financial support for streaming promotions to maintain a dependent relationship. An external legal investigation hired by Embark reportedly did not substantiate the claims, but the company deemed the situation “unsustainable.”
Runesson, a prominent figure in Embark's public presence through interviews and community engagement regarding both Arc Raiders and The Finals, co-founded the studio with several former EA DICE employees. The controversy adds to a recent wave of accusations against male players in the The Finals esports scene.
The Finals had previously paused outbound esports efforts while reviewing its competitive system. Embark maintains its review process was thorough, stating they are “confident that at this time, our decisions and actions have been appropriate and within the scope of our responsibilities.” The company’s statement confirmed the mutual parting with Runesson.
This incident underscores the escalating scrutiny surrounding workplace conduct within the gaming industry, particularly regarding power dynamics and influencer relationships. The speed with which these allegations gained traction and resulted in a public statement reflects a shift towards greater accountability.
