GameStop CEO Considers Dropping eBay Acquisition Bid for Partnership
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen is reportedly contemplating abandoning his substantial $56 billion bid for eBay, exploring instead a potential partnership between the two companies, according to a Bloomberg report.
Shift from Acquisition to Joint Venture
Instead of outright acquiring the online auction site, GameStop could propose a strategic partnership or joint venture. This arrangement would allow eBay to leverage GameStop’s extensive network of 1,600 retail locations across the United States. A successful partnership would likely involve GameStop seeking a seat on eBay’s board of directors.

Previous Offer Rejected
Cohen’s pursuit of eBay began in May 2023 with an unsolicited offer of $125 per share, totaling $55.5 billion. eBay swiftly rejected the offer, deeming it “neither credible nor attractive.” Despite this initial setback, Cohen has remained steadfast in his ambition to transform eBay into a formidable competitor to Amazon.
Continued Commitment & Store Closures
Recently, GameStop announced plans to close hundreds of stores, while simultaneously increasing its ownership stake from 5% to nearly 10%. Cohen has emphasized that these efforts are geared towards enhancing efficiency and facilitating growth, stating, “The more efficient you get, the easier it is to grow.”
Future Strategy Remains Uncertain
While GameStop maintains its public stance of pursuing ownership of eBay, the possibility of a partnership with eBay is now being seriously considered. The company is currently evaluating various potential paths forward.
