Resident evil 4 merchant owes players 3.3 trillion pesetas after 3 years

Three years after its acclaimed release, Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 Remake is celebrating a milestone – and a staggering debt. The game’s infamous merchant, a beloved yet financially exploited character, is now 3.34 trillion pesetas in arrears to players, according to official figures released by the developer.

The merchant's massive deficit

Capcom revealed that players have spent a colossal 39,914,290,699,099 pesetas (over 39 trillion) on gear from the merchant within the remake. Adding to that, players have purchased 43,251,570,618,389 pesetas (over 43 trillion) worth of other items. The discrepancy? The merchant now owes players a cool 3.34 trillion pesetas.

The Resident Evil 4 remake, lauded with a perfect 10/10 score by IGN upon its 2023 launch, faithfully recreated the original's core gameplay loop. Players could exchange various items for upgrades like weapon enhancements and powerful rocket launchers, essential for surviving the game's challenging encounters. These one-use launchers retailed for 160,000 pesetas, making them a coveted, yet costly, investment.

The merchant's enduring popularity stems from his enigmatic backstory and memorable lines – “What’re you buying, stranger?” being a particular fan favorite. However, the latest installment, Resident Evil Requiem, streamlines this trading system, automating the process.

The sheer scale of the debt highlights the game's enduring appeal and the merchant’s central role in the player experience. While the automated system in Requiem might be a step towards efficiency, it lacks the charm of a shrewd, if perpetually indebted, vendor.

The Resident Evil 4 Remake remains a benchmark for survival horror, proving that a well-crafted experience can foster a lasting, even humorous, relationship between player and antagonist. The merchant’s plight isn't a failure; it's a testament to the game's captivating design.
