Amazon is reportedly committed to running its $1 billion Lord of the Rings adaptation, The Rings of Power, for five seasons, despite the massive costs involved.

Bezos' 'magical halo' protects the series

A new report from The Ankler claims that Prime Video boss Jeff Bezos is personally keen for the show to continue, regardless of the expense. This is according to a source who told the publication that 'that's still under Bezos' magical halo, that's protected for its run.'.

The Ankler also reports that Amazon TV boss Peter Friedlander has assured the show's creatives that they will be given the chance to finish the story, although there is a mention that this may be achieved in either four or five seasons.

Season 3 of The Rings of Power is expected to premiere on Prime Video later in 2026, but any plans for a spinoff series have apparently been scrapped.

The show's high cost is attributed to its expansive, visually effects-heavy production style, which has seen the first two seasons reportedly cost north of $465 million combined. This figure does not include the $250 million Amazon spent on acquiring the rights to the Tolkien estate, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema's five-season deal.

While some have questioned the future of the series due to its hefty price tag and viewership numbers for Season 2, it appears that Amazon is committed to seeing The Rings of Power through to its originally planned conclusion.
