Amazon spikes hexxus with live ferngully remake

Amazon MGM Studios is reviving the 1992 animated cult classic FernGully: The Last Rainforest with a live-action remake, Deadline reports.

Marielle heller to pen and direct the new script

Known for her work on Nightbitch, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, and the Tom Hanks-starring Mr. Rogers biopic, Heller will bring her unique perspective to the fantasy adventure.

FernGully originally told the tale of fairies in the Australian rainforest, featuring an accidentally miniaturized lumberjack, the pollution demon Hexxus voiced by Tim Curry, and the manic bat Batty Koda voiced by Robin Williams.

Despite underperforming at the box office, the first film spawned a sequel, FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue, in 1998, though none of the original cast returned.
