Baldur's gate 3 fans bracing for hbo's post-game extension
The news rippled through
the gaming community like a rogue spell: HBO is extending the world of Baldur's Gate 3, not by retelling its story, but by continuing it. And a sizable chunk of the fanbase isn’t thrilled. The adaptation, spearheaded by Chernobyl and The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin, promises a narrative that picks up after the credits roll of Larian’s critically acclaimed RPG, featuring familiar faces in potentially unfamiliar circumstances.
A question of narrative closure
The core of the discontent lies in the game’s inherent complexity. Baldur's Gate 3 culminates in a multitude of endings—varied states of the world, and radically different fates for beloved characters like Astarion, Karlach, and Shadowheart. Why, many are asking, tamper with a meticulously crafted conclusion that allows for such profound player agency?
Adding fuel to the fire, Larian Studios, the developer behind the game’s success, won’t be directly involved in the HBO adaptation. Swen Vincke, Larian’s CEO, confirmed Mazin’s visit and expressed cautious optimism, noting the showrunner’s apparent fandom. However, the absence of Larian's input is a significant concern for many, raising questions about the adaptation’s fidelity to the original’s spirit.
Neil Newbon, the actor who brilliantly portrayed Astarion, is urging patience. “I really hope people give them space to make the show that they want to make,” he told FRVR.
