Baldur's gate 3 fans forge epic sequel remake

Forget official DLC – a dedicated community is undertaking a monumental task: recreating the entirety of the original Baldur's Gate within Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3. While Larian has shifted its focus to the next Divinity title, the modding scene is stepping up, breathing new life into a beloved classic.

A humble beginning blossoms into an ambitious project

The seeds of this remarkable undertaking were sown in August 2023, when modder 786r786 began what they initially considered a “simple test” of Baldur's Gate 3’s robust modding tools. Their recreation of Candlekeep, the iconic starting area of the original Baldur's Gate, sparked such enthusiastic response that the project quickly evolved into something far grander. The community's passion ignited a snowball effect, attracting a cadre of talented modders eager to contribute.

“I received countless requests from fans of the original games to turn the mod into a full campaign,” 786r786 explained in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun. “The offer of talented modders volunteering to help cemented the idea.” The team is now operating under the banner of 'Deathbringer's Reign,' a name that hints at the scope of their ambition.

The Deathbringer's Reign team isn't simply porting content; they're meticulously adapting the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate for the modern sensibilities of BG3. The original game’s map will be broken down into at least eight distinct zones, introducing randomized encounters to maintain a sense of exploration. The infamous Baldur's Gate city itself presents a unique challenge – a sprawling urban environment far exceeding the density of anything found in BG3.

“The original game has over 100 interiors, while BG3 has roughly 40 buildings in the Lower City,” 786r786 elaborated. “We’re planning to divide the city into three distinct levels to manage the workload and ensure performance remains optimal. Thankfully, Larian has already provided a wealth of graphical assets for the Lower City, allowing us to leverage that foundation as we progress.”

Beyond recreation: enriching the experience

But the project goes beyond mere visual recreation. Deathbringer’s Reign intends to integrate new dialogue and encounters, cleverly utilizing BG3’s mechanics, such as the ability to converse with animals or the dead. The long-term vision includes fully voiced dialogue, pushing the mod's fidelity even further.

If successful, this endeavor will allow players to experience the early adventures of iconic characters like Jaheira and Minsc, faithfully recreating the narrative penned by BioWare back in 1998. According to HowLongToBeat, a playthrough focused on the main story could take around 30 hours, while a completionist run pushing for 100% could easily consume 95 hours – not including any additional content the Deathbringer’s Reign team might add.
