Buffy reboot scrapped: gellar blames executive's lack of love for the series

Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed the Hulu reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been canceled, citing a deeply problematic executive who actively undermined the project from its inception. The news, delivered to Gellar and director Chloé Zhao just hours before their scheduled public appearances, has sent shockwaves through the fanbase.

Cancellations on the cusp of celebrations

Gellar shared the devastating news with fans over the weekend, a mere blink of an eye before she was set to promote her new film, Ready or Not 2, and while Zhao was preparing for her Oscars nomination for Hamnet. The timing, Gellar emphasized, was particularly cruel.

“I got the call as we were stepping onto stage for the premiere of their own movie [Ready or Not 2]. And it’s also the weekend of Chloé going to the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet. For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something I worked very hard for is… That says something,” Gellar told People.

The reboot had garnered significant momentum, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong cast as the new Slayer and several original Buffy cast members expressing their support. “I’d like to use this moment also to say that Ryan Kiera Armstrong is a superstar,” Gellar noted. “I’m gutted that no one will see her as a Slayer.”

The primary obstacle, according to Gellar, was a single executive who openly expressed his disdain for the original series. “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him,” Gellar revealed. “That’s very hard when you’re taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to me and Chloé. So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn’t watch it… How do you do a show that’s beloved with someone that doesn’t love it?”

Chloé Zhao had previously indicated she wasn’t entirely surprised by the cancellation. Former Buffy castmates have since reached out to express their disappointment. Gellar spoke with David Boreanaz the night before the announcement. “We don’t want to let the fans down,” she said. “That hurts. [We’re] saddened at how it was handled and when it was handled.”

While sources suggest Hulu remains interested in exploring future iterations of the Buffy franchise, this particular reboot appears dead in the water. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how passionate fanbases can be, and how easily creative projects can be derailed by internal negativity.
