Carpenter's nightmare vision takes shape in new graphic novel
The 120-page graphic novel is a collaborative effort. Carpenter co-wrote the story with producer Sandy King and Sean Sobczak, with artwork by Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna. Color work is handled by Ryan Winn, and lettering by Marshall Dillon.
The story unfolds in downtown Los Angeles, centered around an abandoned cathedral ignored by the city. A gruesome murder thrusts the dilapidated church into the spotlight, triggering a police investigation led by Lieutenant Christine Marks and detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfield. Their descent into the cathedral reveals a centuries-old evil.
Carpenter described the genesis of the story as a vivid nightmare: “I saw it in a dream: a nightmare landscape deep underground filled with monsters too weird and sinister to exist in daylight.” He felt compelled to translate this unsettling vision into a tangible form.
John Carpenter's Cathedral is priced at $22.99 and scheduled for release on August 4, 2026. Preorders are available now on Amazon. This marks a significant expansion for the director, demonstrating his enduring creative energy beyond the silver screen. It’s a testament to the power of a truly unsettling idea.
