Clueless reboot dreams doused: silverstone’s cher project officially axed
The shimmering promise of a Clueless television revival has vanished, extinguished as abruptly as a perfectly-timed shade drop. Peacock’s attempt to resurrect Cher Horowitz – thanks to the original Alicia Silverstone – has been scrapped, leaving a frustratingly open question mark hanging over the future of the iconic franchise.
A sequel's long, winding road
Just last April, Peacock announced the project, sparking immediate excitement amongst fans. Silverstone herself, speaking to Entertainment Tonight, acknowledged the early stage of development, delicately navigating the complexities of revisiting a beloved character. ‘Where we are at with that is that it’s very early stages,’ she’d said. ‘I’m obviously excited. I never thought that that was something that I would ever do because I wouldn’t want to mess up this thing that we all love so much.’
She envisioned a Cher evolved, a character reflecting the 2025 landscape – one prioritizing sustainability and veganism, a subtle yet significant shift from the designer-clad original. “I can’t wait to step back into Cher’s skin and her fancy designer shoes that will be gently used. Of course, duh. Because she’s evolved, this is 2025. She’s not wearing the new stuff. Unless it’s, you know, sustainable or vegan. I mean, we’ll have to see how far we can go with that. But let’s see.”

Past attempts, present disappointment
This isn’t the first time a Clueless spin-off has stumbled. Back in 2020, CBS TV Studios attempted to focus on Dionne Davenport, but the idea, initially picked up by Peacock, ultimately succumbed to the pressures of development. The project’s history is a testament to the delicate nature of adapting a cultural touchstone – a lesson, perhaps, in respecting the original’s legacy.
The creative team behind the revived series – including writers Stephanie Savage, Josh Schwartz, and Jordan Weiss – boasted impressive credentials, drawing on experience from Gossip Girl, The OC, and Dollface. Amy Heckerling, the director and writer of the original film, was also involved, ensuring a commitment to honoring the source material. Yet, despite these strong foundations, the project has been pulled, leaving a lingering sense of what might have been.

A possibility remains
While the Peacock iteration is dead, Variety reports that the concept still holds some interest, suggesting a potential for another network to swoop in. It’s a frustrating, if predictable, turn of events in a landscape often dominated by shifting priorities and fluctuating budgets. But, for now, the vision of a digitally-aware, sustainably-minded Cher remains just that – a vision. The Clueless spirit, however, persists, waiting for its next, perhaps more enduring, manifestation.
