Dc's absolute universe swings for manga-inspired action in new batman series
DC's Absolute Universe line has been a hit with fans, and a key reason is its clear inspiration from the world of manga. This influence is more apparent than ever in Absolute Batman, a series that reimagines Bruce Wayne as a blue-collar everyman turned vigilante force of nature in a Gotham City ruled by the wealthy elite like the Joker.
Chainsaw man homage takes center stage in absolute batman #18
The latest issue, Absolute Batman #18, pays direct homage to Tatsuki Fujimoto's dark manga series Chainsaw Man. The wraparound cover art by Clay and Seth Mann is a dead giveaway, with Batman dual-wielding chainsaws on his arms against a green and red backdrop eerily reminiscent of Chainsaw Man's aesthetic.
This homage isn't limited to the cover art alone. Inside the issue, Batman indeed wields chainsaws as he battles Poison Ivy, who also sports a manga-esque look in this twisted universe. The series' protagonist, Absolute Bruce Wayne, shares similarities with Chainsaw Man's transforming hero Denji, both embodying the idea of an ordinary person becoming a terrifying vigilante.
But Absolute Batman's manga influences extend beyond Chainsaw Man. Many fans have pointed out parallels with Kentaro Miura's Berserk, particularly during the series' second arc, "Abomination," which pits Batman against a terrifying version of Bane.
So, what do you make of this Chainsaw Man homage in Absolute Batman? Should the series continue leaning into its manga inspirations? Share your thoughts in the comments.
