Dewey dives into dickens: 'malcolm in the middle' star shuns reboot millions
The reunion everyone anticipated is facing a significant hurdle: Erik Per Sullivan, the beloved Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle, has reportedly turned down a substantial offer to reprise his role in the forthcoming reboot, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. The news, revealed by Jane Kaczmarek, Lois's ever-sharp-tongued portrayer, throws a wrench into what was shaping up to be a triumphant return for the iconic sitcom.

A scholar's pursuit trumps hollywood's gold
Kaczmarek, speaking to The Guardian, detailed the surprising development: Sullivan, now 34, is “studying Dickens and is an incredible student.” The offer, she stated, was “buckets of money,” but ultimately, Sullivan declined, prioritizing his academic pursuits over a lucrative return to television. The initial whispers of his absence surfaced back in June 2025, with Bryan Cranston, perpetually the affable Hal, admitting Sullivan's commitment to a Harvard master's program effectively sidelined his involvement. As Cranston wryly put it, Sullivan had declared, “Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something.”
Sullivan’s exit from acting was a deliberate one, made at age 19, following the show's original run from 2002 to 2006. It signaled a conscious decision to explore avenues beyond the spotlight—decisions that clearly resonate even today. While fans mourn the absence of Dewey’s signature chaos, the majority of the original cast is slated to return, including Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, Cranston as Hal, Christopher Kennedy Masterson as Francis, Justin Berfield as Reese, and Kaczmarek as Lois. Emy Coligado, a recurring presence in later seasons, also rejoins the ensemble as Piama, Francis’s wife.
Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps in to portray the grown-up Dewey, a necessary casting given Sullivan’s decision. The miniseries, a four-part affair focusing on Malcolm's return home for his parents’ 40th anniversary celebration, also welcomes several new faces. Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae will embody the younger siblings, Jamie and Kelly, with Timpano’s character previously appearing as a baby. Keeley Karsten and Kiana Madeira round out the additions as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, and girlfriend, Tristan, respectively.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair premieres on Hulu and Hulu + Disney+ on April 10th, promising a nostalgic trip down memory lane—albeit one missing a key ingredient. The choice of Sullivan speaks volumes about the shifting priorities of even the most celebrated child actors, proving that intellectual curiosity can sometimes outweigh the allure of Hollywood’s vast fortune.
