Exodus Developer Highlights Mass Effect Parallels, Branching Storylines

Archetype Entertainment’s upcoming space opera RPG, Exodus, is drawing comparisons to BioWare’s Mass Effect series, particularly due to its focus on player choice and companion relationships. Narrative director Drew Karpyshyn, a veteran writer from BioWare’s acclaimed titles, acknowledged the similarities during a hands-on preview.

Branching Narrative and Companion Dynamics

Karpyshyn stated that the Mass Effect experience can serve as a useful reference point for understanding Exodus’s core mechanics. He emphasized the importance of impactful decisions, noting that choices will directly affect the game’s ending and potentially lead to companions departing the party entirely. “Depending on choices you make, by the end of the game, you might not have every companion with you that you started with,” he revealed.

Beyond just the ending, Karpyshyn highlighted the dynamic between players and companions, emphasizing that they will often clash over decisions and actions. He also pointed out that in-game events, even optional content, can introduce choices that alter storylines, character relationships, and future missions. “Even within that optional content, there are choices that will lock or unlock certain things, change the way things play out, change relationships, change characters, change… future… missions…”

Exodus is slated for release on April 7, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Further details and insights can be found in the full interview with Drew Karpyshyn and the original hands-on preview.
