Fable's Main Quest Estimated at 20 Hours, Developers Say

Playground Games has confirmed that the main questline in the upcoming Fable will take approximately 20 hours to complete. This estimate was shared by associate game directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler during a Q&A session at gamescom 2026, as reported by Polygon.

Focus on Concise Main Story

While Fable will offer a substantial amount of content for extended playtime, the developers emphasized that players won't need to invest hundreds of hours to finish the core narrative. Kennedy stated the game will feature around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay and a similar amount for side content and open-world exploration.

This playtime is shorter than some recent sprawling RPGs like Elden Ring, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which often require 50 hours or more to complete the main story. However, the shorter main quest aligns with the playtime of previous Fable titles: the original 2004 Fable took around 12.5 hours, Fable 2 approximately 13 hours, and Fable 3 roughly 13.5 hours.

Limitless 'Life Systems' Offer Extended Play

Limitless 'Life Systems' Offer Extended Play

Despite the relatively concise main quest, the developers assure players that Fable offers significant replayability. Kennedy highlighted the game's “life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.” Littler echoed this sentiment, stating players “can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do.” Completionists can typically expect to spend around 30 hours with the first Fable and 50 hours with the sequels.

Fable is scheduled for release on February 23, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game, initially announced in July 2020, is set to launch alongside other titles, a relief for director Ralph Fulton who noted the absence of Grand Theft Auto 6 from the lineup.
