Gosling gives artemis ii a 'hail mary' endorsement mid-flight
Halfway to the Moon, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen has delivered an unexpected but enthusiastic endorsement of Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi hit, Project Hail Mary. The Apollo-era echoes of the Artemis II mission just got a playful, interstellar boost.

A quarantine viewing turned inspiration
Hansen, the first non-U.S. citizen to journey toward our lunar neighbor, shared with interviewers that the Artemis II crew enjoyed a screening of Project Hail Mary during their quarantine period. The film, already a box office phenomenon approaching $400 million globally, provided a welcome distraction and a source of inspiration as the astronauts prepared for their groundbreaking 10-day mission.
“It’s super cool,” Hansen remarked. “We were all really lucky. We got to watch Hail Mary when we were in quarantine. That was a real treat that they sent us a link to view that at home with our families, getting us ready to go on our own space adventure.” He went on to praise Gosling’s performance, noting, “Art imitates science and vice versa, it seems. He did a great job in that movie. It’s wonderful to see people really leaning into those roles.”
The connection between the two ventures is striking, considering both involve humanity’s pursuit of knowledge and survival, albeit in vastly different contexts. Project Hail Mary, with its blend of hard science and heartfelt storytelling, has already garnered widespread critical acclaim—IGN gave it a solid 8/10, praising its “rollicking sci-fi blockbuster” qualities.
As of early Sunday, April 5th, Artemis II is 76,000 miles from the Moon, with lunar closest approach slated for 46 hours from now. The mission, the first to venture beyond Earth’s orbit since 1972, is set to circumnavigate the far side of the Moon before returning to Earth for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on April 10th.
Adding to the goodwill, NASA released the first high-resolution images of Earth taken by the Artemis II crew, captured after a critical engine burn. These images, a testament to the mission's progress, serve as a visual reminder of the incredible journey underway.
The shared connection—a Canadian astronaut, a Canadian actor, and a story about saving humanity—adds an unexpected layer of charm to an already historic mission. Whether Gosling and the Artemis II crew will return to Earth with tales as captivating as those in Project Hail Mary remains to be seen, but for now, the endorsement signals a welcome wave of positivity for both endeavors.
