Hulu has abruptly canceled its highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, just a year after it was greenlit, citing concerns the show was 'too youth-focused' and lacked the involvement of original star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

According to a report by Deadline, the Buffy team had worked tirelessly to address the issues raised by Hulu, crafting a new version of the script that was well-received by TV executives. Gellar was also set to feature in a more prominent role.

However, despite this progress, the project remained in a state of limbo, with discussions between the team and Disney-owned production companies 20th TV and Searchlight Television reportedly ongoing but 'constant and positive' only until the very end.

It was then, late on a Friday, that Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich delivered the devastating news that the project had been dramatically scrapped by Hulu.

Gellar publicly attributed the cancellation to a single executive who was 'not a fan' of the original series, and Deadline's report reveals that executive to be Erwich himself.

Zoe, the Oscar-winning director who spearheaded the Buffy reboot pitch, seemed unsurprised by the outcome when discussing it on the Oscars red carpet, fuelling further speculation about the behind-the-scenes turmoil.

Despite fan excitement and a year of development, the Buffy reboot's abrupt cancellation paints a picture of frustration and bewilderment.
