Id Software Lead Criticizes Xbox Following Layoffs

Following significant layoffs impacting 136 staff at id Software in July, lead services programmer Chris Hays has publicly expressed concerns about Xbox’s approach.

Hays Claims Xbox ‘Doesn’t Understand Art’

During a recent interview with Andre Peschke on Auf ein Bier, Hays stated that it's “impossible” to create AAA games with half the staff, citing the elimination of entire departments and disciplines as a major obstacle. He emphasized that id Software, now operating at approximately half its previous size, is fundamentally different from its former self, highlighting the importance of the studio’s culture and relationships.

Studio Management and Reassurances

Hays alleges that Microsoft and Xbox are attempting to minimize unrest following the layoffs, providing “talking points” to studio management and focusing on assurances rather than transparent communication. He believes the goal is to prevent employees from leaving and disrupting the studio’s stability.

Reduced Staffing and Future Concerns

Hays confirmed that id Software now has fewer staff than those involved in the development of 2016’s Doom, raising questions about the studio’s ability to produce games of comparable scope. He expressed uncertainty about the future, stating he “has no idea” why the layoffs were structured as they were, though the topic of Xbox Game Pass was briefly discussed.
