Indie game giants forge alliance to weather publishing storm
Five prominent independent game studios – including the forces behind Replied and Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era – are uniting under a new holding company, Nova Assembly, to bolster development and navigate an increasingly precarious gaming market.
A shield against uncertainty
The alliance, spearheaded by Denis Federov, founder of Unfrozen and CEO of Nova Assembly, aims to provide a crucial safety net against looming layoffs and the inherent instability plaguing the industry’s publishing landscape. This isn’t a merger; each studio – Sad Cat Studios, Unfrozen, Weappy, VEA Games, and Game Garden – retains its independent operational identity.

Shared resources, creative control
Nova Assembly’s structure is predicated on a system of mutual support. Studios can leverage each other’s expertise – a specialist skillset, a recently launched successful title – to address challenges without resorting to costly external acquisitions. “We’re fortifying the human element,” explains Ilya Yanovich, Weappy’s co-founder and Creative Director for Nova Assembly, “a deliberate pushback against the growing influence of algorithmic control.”
Beyond funding: a collaborative ecosystem
The open letter released by Nova Assembly details a commitment to far more than just financial backing. It outlines a framework for knowledge sharing, technological collaboration, and a unified publishing arm – a move intended to wrest control of marketing and release strategies directly from gaming platforms. “It’s about fostering a genuine community, not just transactional partnerships,” adds Yanovich. Replacing cold algorithms with human decisions is paramount.
Release dates & future focus
Replied, due on PC and Xbox April 14th (including a Game Pass debut), and Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, launching into Early Access April 30th, will benefit directly. The Eternal Life of Goldman's release window remains unconfirmed. But this alliance signals a significant shift – a recognition that the future of independent game development hinges on solidarity, not isolation.
The bottom line
The industry’s inherent risks, compounded by a rapidly changing technological landscape, demand a proactive approach. Nova Assembly isn’t simply a holding company; it’s a declaration that the spirit of innovation – and the vital connection between creators and their audience – remains a precious, and increasingly fragile, commodity. Let’s be clear: risk is inherent in creation, but facing it together is a different beast entirely.
