Kojima's focus: a more accessible experience
Speaking with PC Gamer, lead level designer Hiroaki Yoshiike revealed Kojima's explicit instruction to broaden the game's appeal. “He wanted more people to enjoy the game right up until the credits rolled,” Yoshiike stated. This isn’t entirely surprising, given reports from earlier in the sequel’s development suggesting Kojima made significant mid-game changes after playtesting revealed the game was “too good” and risked becoming overly niche.
The first Death Stranding installment was lauded for its intricate world-building, but some players found it deliberately paced. Yoshiike explained that the sequel consciously streamlined this aspect. “We didn’t need to provide too many world-building elements,” he said. “For completionists, they can enjoy it, but at the same time, people who don’t necessarily care about it that much, we made sure they can follow the story through other supplemental elements within the game.”
