Markiplier’s ‘iron lung’ streams on youtube – a $50m success despite critical reservations
The claustrophobic, blood-soaked survival horror of Mark Fischbach’s debut film, ‘Iron Lung,’ is finally hitting viewers’ screens, exclusively on YouTube starting May 31st. Deadline reports that the YouTuber-turned-filmmaker, known as Markiplier to his massive online audience, announced the premiere date during a Cannes panel, cementing YouTube as his preferred platform for distribution.

A self-funded descent into darkness
Fischbach, who self-financed and starred in the project – a chilling adaptation of David Szymanski’s 2022 video game – has been vocal about his loyalty to the streaming service. “I’m pretty loyal to it,” he stated, effectively declaring YouTube his home base. The film’s journey to the big screen was initially through limited theatrical releases in January, but the digital route proves to be its primary destination.
‘Iron Lung’ plunges viewers into the oppressive confines of a submarine exploring an alien ocean choked with the remains of vanished stars. The premise: a convict, trapped within this iron coffin, must navigate the crimson depths, a consequence of a catastrophic, unexplained phenomenon. It’s a premise drenched in isolation and dread, and one that, despite mixed critical reception, has already generated significant revenue.
Despite a lukewarm response from many reviewers – IGN’s Luke Reilly noting a “sluggish movie adaption” that “feels interminable” – ‘Iron Lung’ has proven a commercial powerhouse, grossing over $50 million worldwide on a remarkably modest $3 million budget. That’s a return on investment that speaks for itself. Fischbach’s commitment to the project, and his willingness to shoulder the financial burden, are clearly paying off.
The film’s success underscores a growing trend: the power of niche creators and direct-to-consumer distribution. It’s a testament to Fischbach’s dedicated fanbase and his understanding of what resonates with his audience. Let’s be clear: this isn’t some fleeting viral sensation; it’s a calculated and successful venture from a filmmaker deeply connected to his community.
