Masterchef spain pulls a fast one: viewers forced to channel-hop mid-show
Spain's public broadcaster, RTVE, has thrown a curveball to MasterChef fans eager for the premiere of season 14. Instead of a seamless start on La 1 (Channel 1), viewers are being briefly diverted to La 2—a peculiar tactic that’s sparked considerable confusion and a flurry of social media commentary.

The five-minute detour: why the channel switch?
The premiere, airing tonight (March 30th) at 22:30 CET, will begin its culinary journey on La 2 for an initial five minutes before migrating to the main channel. RTVE cites the need to accommodate an accelerated launch for the new season—the earliest since 2023—as the rationale behind this unconventional move. But the timing is particularly odd given the network's history of later premiere times in recent years (22:54 in 2024 and 23:11 in 2025).
To make room for MasterChef’s expedited schedule, RTVE has also opted to shorten La Revuelta, the popular talk show hosted by David Broncano. Instead of its usual 70-90 minute runtime, the show will be condensed to a brisk 40-45 minutes, clearing the path for the cooking competition’s debut. The show’s official Twitter account confirmed the abbreviated broadcast, acknowledging the potential confusion among viewers.
The decision to juggle channels isn't entirely unprecedented for RTVE; the network frequently adjusts programming to accommodate major events and high-profile shows. However, the abrupt channel switch—even for a mere five minutes—has left many wondering if this is a strategic gamble to boost viewership or a logistical hiccup.
The move highlights the increasing pressure on public broadcasters to compete in an increasingly fragmented media landscape. While RTVE Play offers a seamless viewing experience, the channel-hopping requirement for terrestrial viewers underscores the challenges of delivering live content in a multi-platform world.
Whether this experimental approach will prove successful in capturing a larger audience remains to be seen. One thing is certain: tonight’s premiere of MasterChef 14 will be a test of audience loyalty and a reminder that even beloved shows aren't immune to the realities of television scheduling.
