Mega man voice actor walks away after capcom refuses union agreement
Ben Diskin, the iconic voice of Mega Man in the Mega Man 11, will not reprise his role in Mega Man: Dual Override after publisher Capcom insisted on a non-union contract. The decision has triggered a swift response from the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which has issued a “Do Not Work Order” effectively halting production.
Voice actor's departure ignites union dispute
Diskin revealed his exit
on BlueSky, citing concerns over the lack of union protections, particularly regarding the potential use of artificial intelligence. He explained that while Capcom assured him of safeguards against AI voice replication, the company’s firm stance against unionization left him with untenable risk.SAG-AFTRA’s action follows a nearly year-long strike against major game publishers over AI provisions. The strike, which began in July 2024, saw over 98% of union members vote to strike, impacting production across the industry. The union had reached a tentative agreement on interactive media contracts last summer, but the issues surrounding AI remained unresolved.
The core of the dispute lies in Capcom’s refusal to negotiate a union contract, despite Diskin’s willingness to compromise. He stated he was not motivated by financial gain, but by the need for a contract that provides a measure of security in a rapidly changing industry. The game industry has seen significant layoffs this year, amplifying the concerns of voice actors.
“It genuinely wasn’t about the money for me,” Diskin wrote. “It’s been an honor voicing Mega Man in Mega Man 11, the best-selling game in the series’ history, and watching Mega Man reclaim his rightful place as a gaming icon.”
The “Do Not Work Order” means any actor participating in Mega Man: Dual Override could face disciplinary action from SAG-AFTRA. This represents a significant setback for Capcom, and a powerful statement from the union regarding the evolving relationship between human talent and artificial intelligence in entertainment.
The incident underscores a growing tension within the gaming industry as companies explore AI technologies. Diskin’s decision, while personally impactful, highlights a broader concern among voice actors about the potential for their work to be replicated without adequate compensation or protections. It's a wake-up call for studios contemplating the future of voice acting, and a stark reminder that creative labor demands more than just technological advancement.
