Movistar shocks subscribers: old decoders to stop working next year
A wave of anxiety is washing over Movistar Plus+ subscribers as the Spanish telecom giant prepares to pull the plug on older set-top boxes. Starting June 1, 2026, those clinging to antiquated equipment will find themselves staring at a blank screen, a move that’s sparked a flurry of questions and a scramble to understand the implications.

While the UHD model itself is offered at a zero-euro price, the Smart Wi-Fi version carries a €60 self-installation fee or €110 with professional installation. However, Movistar assures users they will receive a compatible model gratis, regardless of the installation path.
The move is a clear push towards higher-resolution content and a more modern viewing experience. For those invested in 4K streaming and the latest features, it’s a welcome upgrade. But for those content with standard definition, it represents an unwanted, albeit free, disruption.
