Nasa's 'silent' supersonic jet flies trouble-free, third time's the charm
After a brief, concerning hiccup just days prior, NASA’s X-59 Quesst, the experimental aircraft promising a quieter supersonic future, successfully completed its third flight test. The incident, which grounded the jet for a mere day, initially raised eyebrows, but preliminary investigations revealed a simple installation error with one instrument rather than a systemic flaw.

Pushing the envelope: towards a quieter boom
The latest flight, originating and returning to the Armstrong Flight Research Center, saw the X-59 spend approximately one hour aloft. This extended duration is part of a carefully orchestrated plan to gradually expand the aircraft’s operational envelope, meticulously gathering data as it approaches the critical threshold: breaking the sound barrier. The core objective remains unchanged: to validate the aircraft’s design, specifically its ability to dramatically reduce the sonic boom – the disruptive “boom” heard on the ground when a supersonic aircraft passes overhead.
The initial setback, while prompting a brief pause, has done little to dampen enthusiasm for the X-59 program. NASA's commitment to this project underscores a broader ambition: to potentially reopen transatlantic routes to supersonic commercial flight, a possibility currently constrained by the noise pollution generated by existing supersonic designs. The X-59, with its carefully sculpted fuselage, aims to mitigate this problem, producing a “sonic thump” rather than a jarring boom. This is no small feat, representing years of research and development.
Interestingly, the successful third flight comes as Boom Supersonic, a privately funded competitor, has shifted its focus. Following the second flight of their demonstrator aircraft, the XB-1, the company is prioritizing development of its future passenger aircraft, effectively shelving the XB-1 program for now. Meanwhile, the Aerion AS2, once poised to challenge the Boeing 747, now exists only as a historical footnote, a casualty of shifting market dynamics and economic headwinds. The NASA project, backed by considerable public investment, presents a fundamentally different approach – one focused on proving the viability of quiet supersonic flight before commercialization.
The data gathered from these flights will be crucial. NASA plans to share the findings with international regulatory bodies, potentially paving the way for revised noise regulations that could unlock a new era of supersonic travel. The next few months promise to be pivotal as the X-59 ventures closer to achieving its ultimate mission: demonstrating that breaking the sound barrier doesn’t have to break the peace.
