Aside from a few silly goofs, most 'April Fools' tricks these days are harmless fun. But Square Enix's latest tease has fans of the beloved NieR series scratching their heads and wondering if they're being duped once again.

Nier: cosmic horror: a new project or more misdirection?

The enigmatic tweet, posted by the official NieR Japanese PR account, features a haunting image with the promise of 'Coming Soon.' and no further details. The project title, NieR: Cosmic Horror, has fans speculating wildly about what it could be – a new game, perhaps? An anime? A comic series? Or merely another multimedia spin-off to add to the franchise's already extensive library.

History has shown that Square Enix loves to toy with NieR enthusiasts, repeatedly announcing new projects only for them to end up being something other than a full-fledged, AAA console game. Over the years, fans have been treated to concerts, books, stage plays, and mobile games – all delightful additions, but not what they've been craving.

Despite the frustration, hope still flickers. Automata, the last mainline game, sold an impressive 10 million copies, making a sequel or successor a commercially viable option.
