Okami’s River Sequence Inspired by Spider-Man 2

Hideki Kamiya, director of the acclaimed game Okami, revealed that the game’s iconic river sequence was directly inspired by a pivotal moment in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Planner Hiroshi Shibata drew inspiration from the scene where Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man uses his webs to stop a runaway train.

As detailed on Kamiya’s X/Twitter account, Shibata-san conceived the segment, which tasks players with slowing a speeding log using Amaterasu’s Vine power before she falls off a waterfall. This timed gameplay challenge mirrors the urgency and spectacle of the original Spider-Man 2 scene.

This revelation comes amidst broader insights from Kamiya regarding his games, including the confirmation that Leon S. Kennedy was named after the film Leon: The Professional. Okami is currently receiving a sequel, developed by the newly-formed Clovers, with Capcom’s support. Kamiya expressed a long-held desire to complete the Ōkami story, and the sequel will be a direct continuation of the original’s narrative, not a spin-off.

Details regarding the sequel are currently limited, with Clovers stating that further information will be revealed at a later date. It’s being developed in Capcom’s RE engine, suggesting a similar visual style to the original game.
