Avery, just 12 years old, passed away on September 19, 2026, after a seven-year battle with stage four pancreatoblastoma. To celebrate his life, his parents posted a video of him opening his last set of Pokémon 30th Anniversary trading card packs. The emotional clip shows Avery's joy as he pulls the rare Jirachi SIR card, a Legendary Steel and Psychic Type Pokémon, in his second and final pack.
Egawa, who lives halfway across the globe from Avery's home in Everett, Washington, shared her reaction on Twitter, stating she had been in tears since seeing the video. "I'm so deeply moved. I'm so glad I kept drawing. I've honestly been in tears ever since I saw this," she wrote. "I want my art to bring happiness to people. That's one of the reasons I draw. I'm so glad I put that wish into this piece."
Fans were equally touched by Egawa's response, noting the poignant connection between Jirachi's lore and Avery's story. In the Pokémon universe, Jirachi only awakens every thousand years or so, responding to a voice of purity. Avery had bravely battled his illness for over seven years, becoming a beloved figure in the Pokémon community with 313,000 followers on Instagram.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support Avery's family with medical expenses, which has nearly reached its $130,000 goal. The Pokémon community continues to mourn the loss of the young influencer, sharing fond memories and offering condolences on his Instagram account.
