Pokémon Card Collector Recovers Stolen $4,000 Worth of Cards After Police Offer Little Help
Emilio Kihien, a Canadian Pokémon enthusiast, took matters into his own hands after thieves stole $4,000 worth of his highly-graded, officially-encapsulated Pokémon trading cards from his home in Coquitlam. When Kihien contacted the police, he was told they "couldn't do much" to help him recover his stolen property, with one officer even suggesting he try to catch the culprits himself.

Undeterred, Kihien and his friends tracked down the stolen cards online, posing as interested buyers and setting up an exchange at the Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby. They detained the alleged thieves until police arrived, with reports stating one adult and one juvenile could face criminal charges including theft.
The stolen cards, which included three 2023 Pokémon Mew EN Special Illustration Rare EX cards graded PSA 10, went mostly unharmed, although one case was cracked during the altercation. This incident follows a similar Pokémon TCG theft in Britain, where two thieves were locked up for stealing £71,000 worth of stock after their getaway van broke down.
While Kihien's sting operation was successful, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are urging future victims not to take matters into their own hands, citing concerns about safety and potential legal repercussions. Despite this, Kihien's determination and resourcefulness highlight the lengths some enthusiasts will go to protect their valuable collections.
