Resurrecting a 1963 computer: a quest for early personal computing
David, of Usagi Electric, is undertaking a remarkably ambitious project: reviving a 1963 Librascope General Precision LGP-21, a machine he believes deserves recognition as a pioneering ancestor of the personal computer. It’s a venture steeped in the romance of computing history, and one that carries a significant risk of electrocution – a detail that, frankly, makes even a seasoned enthusiast like myself wince.

What sets the LGP-21 apart is its relatively compact size and manageable weight, particularly its 41-kilogram CPU. When combined with peripherals like a printer, tape reader, monitor, and keyboard, the entire system clocks in at under 200 kilograms – a stark contrast to the behemoths of the era. This accessibility, coupled with its transistorized design (a significant step away from vacuum tubes, though integrated circuits were still nascent), and a price tag equivalent to roughly €150,000 today, positions it as a compelling candidate for the title of “first personal computer.”
The machine's historical significance runs even deeper. The LGP-21 is a descendant of the LGP-30, the computer on which Edward Lorenz and Margaret Hamilton – figures whose contributions profoundly shaped the trajectory of computing – initially developed numerical models for weather prediction. Lorenz’s work on this very machine famously led to the discovery of strange attractors and the butterfly effect, cornerstones of chaos theory. Hamilton, meanwhile, would later lead the software team for NASA’s Apollo program, a testament to the pioneering role women played in the early days of computing—a point explored in our book, “She Led the Code.”
Acquired from Los Alamos, now entrusted to David, the LGP-21’s journey is as fascinating as the machine itself. Originally purchased by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1963, it eventually found its way to Tom Jennings, the creator of FidoNet, who has generously donated it to Usagi Electric. David’s current efforts focus on ensuring the power supply functions correctly, followed by testing the CPU and magnetic drum memory—a task requiring meticulous care and a healthy dose of bravery.
With the Vintage Computer Festival Southwest looming in just ten weeks, the pressure is on. David expects to share further updates as he systematically diagnoses and brings the LGP-21 back to life.
