In a stunning display of dedication bordering on obsession, content creator DocJade has accomplished the seemingly impossible: installing and running the complex game Factorio using 1,2501.44MB floppy disks. The feat, achieved over a week of relentless data transfers, is a nostalgic nod to the early days of PC gaming and a testament to the ingenuity of a bygone era.

A blast from the past
The simplicity of modern game installations has masked a certain charm. Remember the ritual of inserting floppy disks, the anticipation of the game loading, a process sometimes as intricate as building a factory itself? That’s the experience DocJade sought to resurrect. Factorio, known for its demanding system requirements and immediate load times, proved the ideal candidate for this ambitious project.
The challenge stemmed not just from the sheer number of disks, but also from the technical hurdles. Transferring 1.5GB of data to floppy disks – a format largely obsolete for over two decades – required a custom-built installation system dubbed Fluster. This system had to manage the fragmented data, account for the unreliability of floppy disks, and navigate a Windows operating system not designed for such a task.
The process was grueling. DocJade estimates around 1,500 disk swaps during the week-long experiment. The antiquated method meant pausing the installation between disks, allowing for brief respite. And the risks were real: a single read error could halt progress, often requiring a restart of the entire chain. Even running the game presented unexpected complications, with certain functions triggering crashes.
Despite the difficulties, DocJade succeeded. The game not only installed but ran, and he even managed to complete a playthrough, clocking in at nine hours.
