As Spain gears up for Semana Santa 2026, RTVE is offering a unique and accessible way to experience the deeply ingrained traditions: a dedicated, free pop-up channel on RTVE Play. Forget pricey subscriptions; this is a straightforward, national broadcaster delivering content directly to your Smart TV—and it’s timed perfectly for those seeking a respite from the workday.
A feast of processions and classic cinema
RTVE Procesiones, as the channel is dubbed, launches with a focus on live coverage of Spain’s most significant Semana Santa processions. Beyond the visual spectacle, RTVE is also rolling out a curated selection of classic films, aiming to provide a well-rounded cultural experience during the holiday period. The temporary nature of the channel — it will cease broadcasting on April 6th — only adds to its appeal, creating a sense of urgency and a concentrated dose of Semana Santa programming.
But the scope extends far beyond domestic processions. RTVE has secured live feeds from Rome, including the Via Crucis and the Urbi et Orbi blessing, bringing a global perspective to the religious celebrations. Confirmed processions from across Spain include those in Palencia (Veracruz and Santo Sepulcro), Mérida (Jueves and Viernes Santo), Burgos (Santo Encuentro), Medina del Campo (Silencio and Caridad), Málaga (Desembarco de la Legión and Calvario), and many more. Crucially, RTVE isn't abandoning traditional broadcast. On Maundy Thursday, La 1 will feature a special live connection showcasing the Cristo de Mena procession from the Legion, integrated into the popular “La Hora de La 1” program. Good Friday will center on La Madrugá sevillana, with dedicated coverage from TVE and RNE. And La 2 will focus on processions from Granada and Rome, alongside other key events including the Domingo de Ramos Mass from St. Peter’s Basilica.
Beyond the processions themselves, RTVE’s programming will include special reports and regional coverage, capturing the essence of local celebrations. Expect to see segments from Verges (the Dance of Death), Calanda (the Breaking of the Hour), Tudela (the Descent of the Angel), and Castilla-La Mancha (the Tamborradas of Hellín and Tobarra).
Keeping the little ones entertained
Recognizing the importance of family viewing during the holidays, RTVE has also curated a special program for children, leveraging the Clan channel. Disney will expand its programming hours, offering series from 8:30 AM to 10:15 AM daily. New episodes of “Agus y Luy: Churros and Craft” will air, alongside popular shows like Bluey, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Peppa Pig, and Pocoyo. To bridge the generational gap, “Team Total Curiosity” will air daily at 2:05 PM, and a selection of animated films, including classics like Shrek, Bob Esponja: la película, Hotel Transilvania, and The Croods, will be shown throughout the day.
