Rtve unveils 'arte españa': new cultural channel set to launch

RTVE is poised to reshape its cultural landscape with the upcoming launch of Arte España, a new channel dedicated to arts, history, and nature. The channel will debut digitally in late June, followed by a terrestrial rollout at an unspecified later date.

Documentaries lead the charge for new cultural platform

The new channel's programming will heavily feature documentaries, building on RTVE's legacy with renowned natural history series like El hombre y la Tierra. Early acquisitions include Kui Buri – Thailand’s Hidden Eden, Europe’s Amazon, and Golden Eagle – Call of the Wild, all produced by Terra Mater Studios and filmed in 4K.

Arte España will not be a mere replica of its French counterpart, although collaboration is a possibility. The channel will also showcase Spanish cinema, performing arts, classical music, opera, and theater. This strategic move allows RTVE to diversify La 2's content, freeing it up for broader programming initiatives.

The channel's digital launch on RTVE Play and operators is slated for the end of June. While a terrestrial launch date remains unconfirmed, RTVE is keen to ensure wide accessibility. The acquisition of these high-quality documentaries from producers like Autentic and National Geographic signals a clear ambition to compete in the premium content market.

This expansion comes as RTVE navigates a shifting media environment, aiming to engage audiences with a curated selection of cultural programming. The move reflects a broader trend among broadcasters to specialize and cater to niche interests.
