Samsung's brightness claims: marketing hype or engineering reality?
Samsung's latest OLED, the S95H, is generating buzz, but not entirely for the right reasons. While promising a staggering 4500 nits of peak brightness, independent testing reveals a significant gap between marketing materials and real-world performance, a familiar pattern that's raising eyebrows across the display industry.
The ces promise vs. lab results
The initial announcement at CES sparked considerable excitement. 4500 nits is an ambitious figure, even for a high-end OLED, representing a substantial leap from the S95F's peak of around 2200 nits. Yet, laboratory analysis, as reported by AVSForums, paints a different picture. The S95H consistently measures closer to 2400 nits at the 10% window—the standard measurement used for UHD Alliance certification—falling far short of Samsung's initial claim.
The discrepancy isn't unique to Samsung. LG has faced similar criticism regarding their OLED G6's advertised 3500 nit peak, which ultimately measured closer to 3300 nits, though that figure was also achieved under limited conditions.

The panel vs. the product: a tale of two samsungs
The root of the problem, as is often the case, lies in the complex structure of display manufacturing. Samsung operates two distinct entities: Samsung Display, responsible for panel fabrication, and Samsung Electronics, which assembles the final television products. Samsung Display’s panels, in theory, can reach those impressive 4500 nits. But Samsung Electronics, for reasons currently unclear, appears to be deliberately throttling the peak brightness to 2400 nits in the final product.
This practice, while not new, raises questions about transparency and consumer trust. Industry insiders speculate that the brightness reduction is related to thermal management or panel longevity, but Samsung has yet to provide a definitive explanation. The good news is that, according to reports, some “tweaks” can unlock a higher brightness output, though the long-term effects of such modifications remain to be seen.

A stellar tv despite the numbers
Despite the controversy surrounding the brightness figures, the S95H remains a compelling option. Early reviews highlight significant improvements in image processing thanks to the NQ4 AI Gen 3 processor. Testers cite enhanced sharpness, texture, and a more natural, less artificial visual experience – a welcome departure from previous Samsung models. Color accuracy and motion handling remain consistent with last year’s models, and the new Glare Free filter is surprisingly effective, minimizing light reflection on the matte panel while preserving deep blacks.
The silver bezels, slated for the higher-end S99H model in Europe, are a purely aesthetic choice and won’t impact performance. While the brightness gap is a letdown, the S95H is undoubtedly one of the best OLED televisions available, showcasing a significant step forward in picture quality and processing power. The real question is whether Samsung will address this disconnect between promise and reality in future releases.
