Shadows' legacy: ubisoft shifts focus after one year
A year after its
launch, Ubisoft is signaling a definitive move away from Assassin's Creed Shadows, prioritizing future installments. The announcement, made at a celebratory event for the game's anniversary, reveals a strategic pivot towards upcoming projects within the franchise.

Shadows, which debuted following a significant delay and pre-release concerns, saw a major expansion last fall and a Nintendo Switch 2 port just before Christmas. However, Ubisoft’s recent statement indicates a shift in resources. Art director Thierry Dansereau, speaking to IGN, expressed pride in the game’s release, highlighting its technological contributions to the Assassin’s Creed universe.
Dansereau specifically pointed to the integration of real-time ray traced global illumination and the development of Atmos, Ubisoft’s dynamic weather system. “There’s quite a few things that will make their way through [to future games],” Dansereau concluded, suggesting a lasting impact beyond Shadows’ immediate lifespan. He framed the game’s completion as “a small miracle,” given its complex development and numerous contributors.
The company’s pipeline includes Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, slated for release later this year, and the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Hexe, though a 2027 launch is the earliest projection. Further ambitions include Assassin’s Creed Jade, an Ancient China-set smartphone game, and a live-action Netflix series currently in production.
The strategic redirection underscores Ubisoft’s commitment to evolving the Assassin’s Creed series, even if it means relinquishing support for individual titles. The focus now is on building the next generation of experiences – and leveraging the hard-won technological groundwork laid by Shadows.
