Shadows' legacy: ubisoft shifts focus after one year
A year after its
launch, Assassin's Creed Shadows is fading into the background. Ubisoft acknowledged the game's sunsetting, prioritizing upcoming titles in the franchise. The announcement, made at an anniversary event, reveals the game’s technological contributions will influence future installments.
Thierry dansereau praises shadows' technical advancements
Speaking to IGN, Shadows art director Thierry Dansereau expressed pride in the game's release. He highlighted improvements to core gameplay mechanics, including parkour, stealth, and combat. Dansereau specifically pointed to the implementation of real-time ray traced global illumination and Atmos, Ubisoft's dynamic weather system, as advancements set to benefit future Assassin's Creed games.
The decision to move on from Shadows comes after a year of updates, including a major expansion and a release on the Nintendo Switch 2. Despite the relatively short lifespan, the game undeniably pushed the boundaries of the franchise's graphical capabilities.
Ubisoft’s development slate remains full. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced is slated for release later this year, followed by Assassin's Creed Hexe, projected for a 2027 launch. Other projects include Assassin's Creed Jade, a long-in-development mobile game set in Ancient China, and a live-action Netflix series currently in production.
Dansereau's comments underscore a strategic shift within Ubisoft. While Shadows may be concluding its active support phase, its technological innovations are poised to shape the future of the Assassin's Creed series. The company's commitment to the franchise remains, but resources are being redirected toward projects with longer-term potential.
The focus now is clear: build upon the foundations Shadows laid and propel the series into its next chapter.
