Space marine 2 voice pack fiasco: developer apologizes, offers refunds
Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive have issued a swift apology to players after the controversial $5 Chapter Voice Pack DLC for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 sparked widespread outrage. The developers have now made the DLC free and are offering full refunds.

Players faced jarring gameplay issues with voice pack
The DLC, featuring 450 re-recorded voicelines and cosmetic items for Blood Angels, Space Wolves, and Black Templars chapters, was met with immediate criticism upon release. Players quickly pointed out a significant flaw: the voice lines didn't integrate seamlessly into the game. Even when a DLC voice line was equipped, the game would revert to the character’s default voice when interacting with objectives, creating a jarring and awkward experience. This led to an overwhelmingly negative reception on Steam.
The backlash significantly dampened what should have been a positive period for the game, especially following the addition of the Techmarine playable class in patch 12.0. The game had been a commercial success for Focus, Saber, and Games Workshop, boosting the popularity of the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game. Indeed, the protagonist, Titus, has become a prominent figurehead for the franchise.
“We heard your feedback regarding the Chapter Voice Pack DLC and wanted to address it,” a statement from Focus Entertainment read. “It’s obvious this DLC has failed to meet your expectations and we are sorry about that. Delivering quality content - free or not - is a priority for us.”
Tim Willits, head of development at Saber, downplayed concerns about shifting focus to Space Marine 3 in a recent interview with IGN. He affirmed that the studio remains committed to supporting Space Marine 2, pointing to the recent Techmarine update’s success. “We actually just released a big update and it’s still going strong,” Willits stated.
The refund process is currently underway, with platforms collaborating to facilitate the returns. While the developers are taking steps to rectify the situation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thorough testing and player feedback in the live service gaming model. Games Workshop’s reputation is intrinsically linked to the quality of its game adaptations.
The swift response from Focus and Saber demonstrates an understanding of the severity of the player dissatisfaction. However, the incident raises questions about quality control within the rapidly expanding video game market.
