Spanish id just got digital: your phone is now your passport
Forget fumbling for your wallet – Spain has officially launched digital DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad), allowing citizens to verify their identity using just their smartphones and an internet connection. This marks a significant shift in how Spaniards interact with public services, but a few key limitations remain.
The long-awaited digital revolution arrives
For years, Spanish citizens have watched as banks and transport companies embraced digital identification, while government processes clung to the physical card. The transition to a digital DNI has been a protracted affair, and the frustration has been palpable. Today, however, that changes. The digital DNI is now live, promising streamlined authentication across a range of situations.
But before you toss your physical ID card, there's a crucial caveat: voting. The Central Electoral Board has, inexplicably, suspended the use of the digital DNI for electoral purposes, a decision that many view as counterintuitive given its enhanced security features. This raises a fundamental question: why prioritize physical cards over a demonstrably safer digital alternative?
Where your digital id falls short
Beyond the voting restriction, several other scenarios still require the traditional DNI. You'll need the physical card when lacking internet access, during online identification processes (ironic, isn’t it?), and crucially, for any digital signature requirements—those will continue to rely on existing digital certificates. Crossing borders on planes or other transport also necessitates the physical card. In essence, the digital DNI is sidelined when alternative methods exist, particularly those involving digital signatures, or when venturing beyond Spanish territory.
The good news? In a multitude of everyday situations, your smartphone will be just as accepted as your physical ID. Think university administrative tasks, proving age of majority, renting a car, checking into hotels, or even gaining entry to cinemas and theaters. Physical transactions will also see the digital DNI readily accepted.
The rollout is gradual, but the potential is undeniable. The list of accepted use cases is expected to expand over time, slowly chipping away at the remaining limitations.
Getting started: downloading the midni app
The activation process is surprisingly simple, taking just minutes. Download the MiDNI app from the official Android and iOS stores, register using your existing DNIe certificate and PIN, input your DNI number and support number, create a password or enable biometric identification, and finally, enter the SMS code you receive. And that’s it—your DNI is operational.
The Dirección General de la Policía has released the app and provides detailed instructions. It's a quick and seamless process.
While questions remain about the electoral restriction, the arrival of the digital DNI represents a tangible step forward in modernizing Spanish public services. The convenience is undeniable, and the potential for wider adoption is significant. The government must now address the inexplicable voting restriction to fully realize the benefits of this technological leap.
