Spectrum launch aborted: isar aerospace's orbital dreams delayed
Andøya Spaceport witnessed a frustrating near-miss last night as Isar Aerospace’s second attempt to launch its Spectrum rocket was scrubbed mere seconds before liftoff. The European space sector, eager to see a private company break into orbit, must wait a little longer.
The chain of delays: from vessel intrusion to system anomaly
The lead-up to the launch, dubbed “Onward and Upward,” was fraught with complications. Initially, the launch was postponed in January due to issues with ground equipment – a setback Isar Aerospace claimed to have resolved. Then, favorable weather conditions finally arrived, setting the stage for yesterday's attempt. However, a rogue vessel strayed into the safety zone surrounding the Andøya Spaceport, forcing a pause. The fifteen-minute launch window, scheduled to open at 21:00 CET (UTC +1), evaporated as the vessel slowly departed.
But the vessel’s intrusion wasn’t the final hurdle. With the countdown resumed and the final sequence underway, the rocket’s control systems detected an anomaly just three seconds before ignition. There simply wasn’t time to recycle the launch, even if the issue had been readily identifiable – a prospect deemed unlikely given the complexity of the systems involved.

Spectrum: a technical deep dive
The Spectrum rocket, a formidable 28-meter-long, 2-meter-wide structure, represents Isar Aerospace’s ambition to carve out a niche in the burgeoning small satellite launch market. Powered by two stages utilizing liquid propane and oxygen, it’s designed to deliver payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) or 700 kilograms to Sun-synchronous orbit. Notably, both the nine Aquila-SL engines in the first stage and the Aquila-Vac engine in the second stage are Isar Aerospace designs.
The first attempt, remember, ended abruptly when a purge valve malfunctioned, triggering a loss of attitude control and an automatic self-destruct sequence. This latest failure, shrouded in technical mystery, underscores the inherent risks of spaceflight.
This mission was intended to validate the rocket’s critical systems in a real-world operational environment, carrying five CubeSats: Platform 6, TriSat-S, SpaceTeamSat 1, FramSat 1, CyBEEsat, and the Let It Go experiment from Dcubed, which isn't designed to separate from the rocket itself. With the launch postponed, the question now isn't merely if Spectrum will reach orbit, but when.
The company now faces a daunting task: pinpointing the cause of the T-3 second shutdown and implementing a solution. While spring's approach offers increasing meteorological reliability, the real challenge lies in the engineering analysis that must precede the next attempt. The fate of Isar Aerospace, and potentially the future of private European space launch, hangs in the balance.
