Starfield's massive update: bethesda hiding secrets?
After a lukewarm reception
and over two years of incremental improvements, Bethesda is rolling out what they're calling Starfield’s biggest update yet – and it’s even larger than initially advertised. The patch, alongside a new paid DLC, arrives this Tuesday, April 7th, promising a significant overhaul, but players are already uncovering hidden features and locations that Bethesda conspicuously omitted from their pre-launch marketing.
New achievements reveal unexpected content
The discovery began with the release of new achievement listings on Steam, which detail features and locales completely absent from the game’s promotional materials. Most notably, the “Quid Pro Quo” achievement, earned by constructing and delivering an outpost to a faction, highlights a renewed significance for outposts – a feature consistently criticized at Starfield’s launch. Bethesda has been steadily refining them, and this achievement suggests a deeper integration with faction relationships.
But the surprises don’t stop there. The “Dominion of Magnetism” achievement requires completing a task—details deliberately obscured here to avoid spoilers—in a previously unmentioned location called New Babylon. Community members have noted that the achievement description strongly suggests it's a substantial settlement, potentially even a city, within the Terran Armada DLC. This is a location entirely absent from any prior Bethesda communications.
Adding further fuel to the speculation is the “Augmented Frequency” achievement, which rewards players for fully upgrading Delta, the companion introduced in the DLC. The existence of a dedicated upgrade system for Delta was never publicized. The combined effect of these revelations has many players wondering what other significant additions Bethesda has kept under wraps.
Starfield’s evolution over the past two years has been a long, iterative process, evidenced by additions like the planetary exploration vehicle. The question now isn’t whether this update is substantial, but whether Bethesda is deliberately holding back information to generate further excitement—a tactic reminiscent of Gabe Newell’s infamous 2011 realization within Valve that nobody could tell him “no.”
Both the paid DLC and the free update launch on April 7th at 17:00 CEST, simultaneously across all platforms, including the long-awaited PlayStation 5 release. Whether these changes will be enough to sway those who remain unconvinced remains to be seen.
