Starlink aims high: seeks fcc approval for faster, more efficient satellite internet
SpaceX's Starlink internet service is revving up for a major speed boost as it petitions the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to utilize two new frequency bands.
Starlink's quest for symmetrical speeds
In a move aimed at resolving the long-standing issue of asymmetric download and upload speeds, Starlink has requested access to the 13.75-14.0 GHz and 14.5-14.8 GHz frequency bands, which would enable it to deliver more balanced performance.
The company argues that its current 4:1 speed imbalance between download and upload speeds hinders performance in applications that require high upload capacity, such as video conferencing.

However, Starlink's bid for these frequency bands faces a hurdle. The FCC demands that devices operating in these bands must have a minimum antenna diameter of 4.5 meters, a requirement that none of Starlink's current products meet.
In response, Starlink has filed a request with the FCC for exemptions on seven of its popular products, including the Starlink Mini, allowing them to access the sought-after frequencies.

A path forward
While the FCC's decision is still pending, Starlink has a history of favorable treatment from the regulatory body. If approved, this development could be a major win for the satellite internet provider, enabling it to offer more competitive speeds to its growing customer base.
