Starlink users, brace yourselves for a subtle shift in your hardware landscape. The satellite internet giant has quietly rebranded its router lineup, swapping out familiar names for a new designation. But before you rush to upgrade, the news isn't quite what it seems.

The 'standard 4' emerges: a cosmetic refresh
Eagle-eyed customers browsing the Starlink online store have noticed the disappearance of the 'Standard 3' and 'Standard 3 X' models, replaced by the 'Standard 4' and 'Standard 4 X' respectively. Initial speculation ran rampant – were we on the cusp of a significant performance boost? Was this the long-awaited WiFi 6 upgrade that O2 customers have been eagerly anticipating?
The reality, however, is far less dramatic. According to Starlink and confirmed through Reddit discussions, this is merely a name change. The underlying hardware remains identical to the previous generation – the 'Starlink Gen. 3,' as it was officially known. It’s a semantic shift, nothing more.
Starlink’s rationale, as stated on its support page, is to “simplify the names of our products.” The 'Standard 4 X' now represents what was previously the 'Starlink Gen. 3,' and the 'Mini' router is now simply the 'Standard 4.' A move ostensibly designed to ease user comprehension and streamline connection management.
This isn't the first instance of a company tweaking product names for perceived simplicity – Movistar recently followed suit with its own router revisions. But in this case, the consumer gains are minimal. While a fresh coat of nomenclature is always welcome, it doesn't address the underlying concerns about Starlink’s performance, particularly regarding the ongoing quest for improved bandwidth, a move recently amplified by their request for additional spectrum in the United States.
The bottom line? Don’t expect a speed boost or any tangible hardware improvements. This rebranding exercise is a testament to Starlink’s attention to user feedback and their continuous efforts to refine their product ecosystem, even if that refinement is purely cosmetic. For now, the focus remains on optimizing the existing network infrastructure, rather than introducing a completely new router generation—a point underscored by the lack of FCC filings for any new models.
